Swami Agnivesh slams KCR's yagam, boycotts rituals

HYDERABAD: Swami Agnivesh, the founder of Arya Sabha and chairperson of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, slammed the Ayuta Chandi Yagam performed by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, saying it only promoted 'blind faith' and 'miracle mongering' while boycotting the mega event.

The former MLA from Haryana and former chairperson of the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery , said the cost involved in the yagam, was `humongous and complete waste'. While KCR maintained that the yagam was being conducted with funds from close friends, opposition parties tore into him for wasting public money.

In an open letter to President Pra nab Mukherjee, denouncing the yagam, Swami Agnivesh said: "The chief minister and, more than him, you are duty-bound to promote rationality and scientific temper and thus not only reject, but also stamp out such occult practices." "Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had exhorted in his first parliamentary address that the only way to rid the nation of its poverty is to fight blind faith through education," Swami Agnivesh, who was born in Srikakulam, said in his letter.

He said that unfortunately no concrete action has been taken against such acts and urged the President to also condemn and reject the invitation.
Ironically, the President's chopper did not land at the venue due to a massive fire that engulfed part of the main yagam venue.
