The Dayanand Shilpa Vidalaya, Garhi, New Delhi

Garhi is a slum area which is populated mostly by migrant people from financially depressed areas like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, etc. There was an urgent need for a provision of a school for the children who, for family reasons, were unable to attend either formal government schools (often because they have to take care of younger siblings or spend some time working for the family) or private schools. Bandhua Mukti Morcha (BMM) was given a building by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to organize a school for young children and a skills center for girls. The whole of the first floor of a concrete building belonging to a municipal community center was given for this purposes.

Children are able to attend from Standard I through to Standard IV and go through the prescribed syllabus of the Delhi Educational Administration. In addition English classes are conducted. Because these are children from an extremely depressed background, provision is also made for nourishment to be provided during the school day in the form of milk, bread, fruit, kheer (rice boiled in milk with sugar and spice added).

The children's school was being attended by between 35-40 boys and girls. However, in August 2002, the municipal government demolished the shanty town and homes of the area and moved the inhabitants approximately twenty miles away. The school remained open during this period but attendance dropped dramatically and only about a dozen students whose parents had escaped the forced removal, were able to attend. Other slum towns around this area were not demolished and children from these quickly applied to fill the vacancies. There are now again 35 children - 20 boys and 15 girls attending school. The School functions from 8:30 am to 12:30 am with half an hour break for lunch and play. There are four classes - I, II, III & IV. Their syllabus is as prescribed by Delhi Administration. In addition, they are taught English. The children are well dressed with glowing faces. Looking at them attending their classes it is hard to believe that these children are slum dwellers. On completion of IV standard, they are assisted in seeking admission in V standard at formal school.

Regular health checks are done by Dr. Mona Verma.

Staff : One Teacher and one part time cook.

Supervision: The teacher maintains a teacher diary showing every day's progress in studies. He also maintain attendance register. The register is checked by senior staff of BMM every month.
