Press Statement by Swami Agnivesh in support of Maharashtra’s BJP Government for banning meat.

Arya Samaj leader and founder convenor of Sarva Dharma Sansad Swami Agnivesh came out in full support of Maharashtra’s BJP Government for banning meat and slaughter of animals for four days in respect of Jain festival of Paryushan. He appealed to Congress and Shiv Sena leaders to endorse this annual ritual of compassion for Animals, Abstaining from meat for four five days will not physically hurt anyone. Rather it might awaken the dormant love for living creatures in every human heart. What better way to imbibe the teachings of Lord Mahaveer- Ahimsa Paramo Dharma.

Social activist Swami Agnivesh had earlier congratulated Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis for total ban on beef and for implementing ban on the slaughter of Cows, bulls and bullocks etc. In an open letter to Maharashtra CM, he extended full support for effective implementation of this constitutionally mandated step under Art 48 and the landmark 7- Judge judgement of the Supreme Court of India in 2005 with Chief Justice  Lahoti presiding .

Observing a day’s fast last year on his 76 birthday on 21st Sept2014, Swami Agnivesh had submitted a memorandum to PM Narendra Modi and met Finance Minister Arun Jetly along with Muslim, Jain and Sikh religious leaders seeking total ban on Meat and Beef export from India and to take steps to declare Cow a National Animal.
